Hello! My name is Chris Gilmer-Hill, and I’m running for State Representative in District 8. I’m a proud lifelong Detroiter, democratic socialist, environmental justice champion, and union member. I’m running to fight to lower costs and empower and support working people in our communities, workplaces, schools.

My family has called parts of our district home ever since my great-grandma moved up to Russell Woods from Monroe, Louisiana. I believe we need leaders who are connected to their communities - that’s why I came back home to work in Detroit after graduating college, and it’s why I’ve served my neighborhood as a Democratic Precinct Delegate for the last two years.

I believe we need a state rep who will fight for us. We need someone who’s committed to working for our district, not for DTE and corporate interests in Lansing. I’m not taking any corporate money for my campaign - that means you can count on me to work for you and your community.

As our State Representative, I’ll fight to put people first on every issue - but here are my top three:

Meet Chris Gilmer-Hill

1: Affordability for Everyone

We need a state government that puts people over profits and focuses relentlessly on driving down costs for everyday Michiganders. As state representative I’ll take on DTE to strengthen accountability, lower energy costs, and start building towards real public power in Michigan; I’ll tackle the housing affordability crisis by supporting for badly-needed protections for tenants across our state and backing funding for new housing everywhere, including expanded social and publicly-owned housing options for every income level; and I’ll take on insurance companies to fix our health and auto insurance disasters, including vocally supporting MiCARE to establish a single-payer healthcare system and guarantee healthcare as a human right for all in our state.

2: Investing in Communities, not Corporations

Michigan needs to make real long-term investments in our people and communities, instead of doubling down on state-level handouts to billionaires and corporations that put profits over working people. Republican cuts to our state spending programs are a disaster that affects every corner of our state, but especially our most vulnerable and historically marginalized communities. I support expanding our state revenue sharing program to give cities the funds they need for local investments that improve every Michigander’s quality of life, and I support new investments in our public schools that give every child in our state the quality education they deserve.

3. Making Government Work for You

We need state legislators to be deeply rooted in the communities they represent. I grew up in this district, and I’ll always show up to represent and listen. As state representative, I’ll support airtight legislation to get corporate money out of Michigan politics for good. I’ll never take money from AIPAC, DTE, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, or any other corporate or conservative PAC.
